Not that the APRS tracker was in any way a problem during the Alpha launch, but it occurred to me that the G1 has audio in and out - so it should be a simple matter to connect the VHF radio to it directly. There's no interactive comms required, so it could take it's own sweet time composing the appropriate tones to send an APRS position/telemetry packet, and then blip the resulting WAV straight out the headset connector to the radio.

It's also possible to do arbitrary USB/serial interfacing via the data port, apparently, so we could run a real GPS into it, assuming that we can't get a firmware fix for the internal one. But if we could, and could also get the camera to work without requiring the screen to be on, the total package could amount to a G1 and radio - which is a nice place to be for maximum altitude.
