Chain stitch with three thread overlock, Juki industrial sewing machine for woven fabrics (not for knits).  IMPORTANT: this machine needs several new parts.  It works fair (not good)  many of the parts are worn and have lots of burrs and the threads break constantly.  The throat plate and foot should be replaced as well as the three thread hooks (immediately). This is for woven fabrics.  You can ask for assistance and a tutorial anytime.  A very good machine!

Sewing...

We have several sewing machines at Noisebridge.

Juki DDL 5550-6: a single needle, lock stitch industrial sewing machine. Made in Japan. IMPORTANT: please do not use bonded nylon thread in the top or the bobbin. Bonded nylon is for heavy fabrics. The Juki DDL 5550-6 is only to be used on light weight to medium weight fabric. For example, cotton lawn, wool suiting, crepe, linen, silk, polyester, shirting and like. Use only guttermann or like quality polyester, silk, or cotton thread. Do not use top stitch weight thread either. If we continue to use threads too thick for the model...well obviously it will ruin the machine. I have fixed the machine everyday and repaired it. It needs a lot of parts replaced. Hopefully, we can ww collectively to take care of this machine to have longevity.

WE NEED TO FUNDRAISE FOR A WALKING FOOT! I saw one at apperal city for $1,100.00. Made in Japan. Juki. This machine is one to use bonded nylon on.

2015 Upgrade

As a spin off of the Noisebridge Booth for Maker Fair 2015 project the sewing area is going to be upgraded. Recently people have started maintaining and using the sewing area regularly again. The casework being built for Maker Faire 2015 will actually be designed for the sewing area so that after the show it may form the basis of the sewing area upgrade project.

I have started collecting inspiration images that will be used to design the cabinets and new sewing area. This project is currently in the conceptual design phase, so if you have ideas please add them here. Not pictured are ideas for storage of donated materials and fabrics. I think there should also be some clothes rods for hanging up projects and materials. Maybe a trip to a fabric store(s) could help.
