FIRE SAFETY
Fire safety
Paid fireinspections
Yearly inspections from Cal Fireshield, https://calfireshield.com/ They should inspect our extinguishers, signage, exits, and so on to help advise us on keeping up to code. They will recharge or replace extinguishers. This costs us about $300 a year.

We currently have two smoke detectors (one upstairs and one downstairs).  We have two fire extinguishers (downstairs rated 3-A:40-B:C, upstairs rated 10-B:C). It would be nice to have a kitchen-oriented extinguisher in the kitchen, and an extinguisher in any lab space that is appropriate to kinds of fires that might occur in that lab space and that won't damage the equipment kept in that lab.  If we have any activity, materials, or apparatus in the space for which our fire extinguishers are not suitable, we should get new fire extinguishers that are compatible with them.
Basic fire safety
Go over this list at Tuesday meetings. At the least, have a monthly walk through with a group from the meeting!

We have no sprinklers or other automated fire suppression (right?) and we have only one exit.  We should consider whether to do anything to improve the marking of the exit and the fire extinguishers.
Extinguishers should be mounted on the wall every 25 feet down our long walls, with clear signs above them.

It would be helpful for safety to ensure that we always have at least one phone available that doesn't depend on power and Internet access to make calls (a land line or cell phone). Schoen 20:37, 1 October 2008 (PDT)
All exits should be marked with lit signs that have current and tested battery backup power in case electricity goes out in a disaster.

First aid
The two fire doors need to be clear, have crash bars for barrier and lock free exiting. The extra doors near the stairwells (that wall the main space off from the stairs up) must be kept closed (because stairwells spread fire very quickly). Be sure to close them when you lock up the space.

We have a first aid kit on the wall next to the kitchen.  We could encourage Noisebridge members to obtain First Aid and CPR certifications. Schoen 20:37, 1 October 2008 (PDT)
Paths from the stairs to the fire exits should be COMPLETELY clear, no junk, lockers, clutter.

Safety for projects, materials, and equipment
FIRST AID
First aid kits are on the white "useful stuff" shelves in the entry, and in the downstairs bathroom.

* Training
We also have Narcan, Covid tests, and drug test kits (to test 'party' drugs for fentanyl).
* Rules or procedures
* Documentation (e.g. MSDS)
** Standard operating procedure at every lab I have ever worked at has been to have a binder containing MSDSs for all materials used in the lab. Some labs also had an electronic version in a CMS; we could add MSDSs to the wiki, as many MSDSs are available on the web. If someone wanted to spring for it, we could also get an account at http://www.msdsonline.com/ or someplace similar. Mlp 23:00, 1 October 2008 (PDT)
* Safety equipment or apparatus (e.g. protective clothing or eyewear, eyewash, ventilation, etc.)

Physical security
* A security grate is needed on the smaller window over the door.
* Bolts on the security grates over the larger windows look somewhat weak. Could use some assessment and possible repair.
* A stronger solid-core door / access control needed
** More discussion in AccessSystem

COVID-19 SOCIAL DISTANCING GUIDELINES
We're definitely going to need to build a fume hood. ANY reaction that evolves gas must be done with appropriate ventilation, even if it's a relatively harmless gas, and the vent over your average stove won't cut it. (I almost killed myself with carbon dioxide in my kitchen once, so I take this very seriously.) It would really be best if we built a fume hood with an air foil. I have a doc with instructions on how to build one, but it's scanned from a textbook so I really shouldn't upload it here. How much linear space is available near the existing exhaust vent? Mlp 23:02, 1 October 2008 (PDT)
* MAX CAPACITY : No more than 49 people were allowed in the space at once in 2021, and more than 25 should only be present with adequate ventilation and event safety considerations handled.   (As of mid 2021 the capacity of the space is closer to 200 but I can't remember the exact number. )
* WEAR MASKS: Wearing masks greatly reduces spreading. It's optional, but effective.

EQUIPMENT SAFETY
* Fire extinguisher: ABC type for sure.
See Noisebridge Lab Safety and Ethics Page.
* Bucket of sand. Check it once a week to make sure that the sand hasn't accreted into a solid block.

* Nitrile gloves should always be in stock; they can be had cheap from American Science and Surplus.
In Case Of Bad Things
* Keep baking soda around for neutralizing acid spills, vinegar for neutralizing base spills.

* Paper towels, loads of them.
POLICE: Dial 911 for emergencies only!.

* You may get a faster response when calling from a cell phone or VoIP phone by calling the SF police at 415-553-8090. Program that number into your phone. The reason is that non-landline calls may go through a general dispatch center where wait times sometimes exceed 1 hour.
* Safety goggles!!!!!
* For non-emergencies (noise complaints, questions, etc...), call 415-553-0123.

FIRE SAFETY[edit]

[edit]

Yearly inspections from Cal Fireshield, https://calfireshield.com/ They should inspect our extinguishers, signage, exits, and so on to help advise us on keeping up to code. They will recharge or replace extinguishers. This costs us about $300 a year.

Basic fire safety[edit]

Go over this list at Tuesday meetings. At the least, have a monthly walk through with a group from the meeting!

Extinguishers should be mounted on the wall every 25 feet down our long walls, with clear signs above them.

All exits should be marked with lit signs that have current and tested battery backup power in case electricity goes out in a disaster.

The two fire doors need to be clear, have crash bars for barrier and lock free exiting. The extra doors near the stairwells (that wall the main space off from the stairs up) must be kept closed (because stairwells spread fire very quickly). Be sure to close them when you lock up the space.

Paths from the stairs to the fire exits should be COMPLETELY clear, no junk, lockers, clutter.

FIRST AID[edit]

First aid kits are on the white "useful stuff" shelves in the entry, and in the downstairs bathroom.

We also have Narcan, Covid tests, and drug test kits (to test 'party' drugs for fentanyl).

COVID-19 SOCIAL DISTANCING GUIDELINES[edit]

 • MAX CAPACITY : No more than 49 people were allowed in the space at once in 2021, and more than 25 should only be present with adequate ventilation and event safety considerations handled. (As of mid 2021 the capacity of the space is closer to 200 but I can't remember the exact number. )
 • WEAR MASKS: Wearing masks greatly reduces spreading. It's optional, but effective.

EQUIPMENT SAFETY[edit]

In Case Of Bad Things[edit]

POLICE: Dial 911 for emergencies only!.

 • You may get a faster response when calling from a cell phone or VoIP phone by calling the SF police at 415-553-8090. Program that number into your phone. The reason is that non-landline calls may go through a general dispatch center where wait times sometimes exceed 1 hour.
 • For non-emergencies (noise complaints, questions, etc...), call 415-553-0123.
 • It is considered very unexcellent to call the police except in case of life threatening violence. In all other situations the police are not welcome at or inside of noisebridge. However sometimes they defer to the police because they are short staffed, or will not help without the police. Please take this into account and do the utmost to deal with situations without inviting the police to noisebridge.

Fire: Dial 911 for emergencies.

 • The designated meeting place in case of evacuation is the sidewalk area in front of the Mi Ranchito market.
 • For non-emergencies call 415-553-0123.

San Francisco City Services: (graffiti, street conditions, alley cleaning, utilities, etc): 311

Water (flooding): Call the landlord.

Minor Medical (< 10 hit points): There's a first aid kit in the middle of the south side of the classroom wall.

Major Medical (>= 10 hit points, shop accident, gunshot wound, etc): Dial 911 for emergencies. The closest hospital is the level 1 trauma center at San Francisco General Hospital - Emergency.
