Our excellent library

Mission Statement

The mission of the library is to serve expert and hacker-y literature to people in Noisebridge right now.

How do I add a new book to the library?

  1. Find the book on Open Library
    1. If the book is not there, create an account and add the book (2 minutes)
  2. Add the book's OLID number to our Catalog: http://library.noisebridge.net/new/
    1. Remember to put in the secret code and press submit!
    2. You will see a green bar when successful
  3. Put the book on the shelf under its category

Library: What's the point?

There's already a public library!

Since there's a public library, we're going to focus on books that fill the needs of people using the space right now.

Anyone can access what they want over the internet almost all the time!

If electronic books are already accessible, we can focus on the people who would still prefer to use a paper copy.

A more refined goal:

The Library can serve expert and hacker-y literature to people in Noisebridge right now.

How do we get there? Quantify, Expand, Prune!

  • First: Understand what books we have.
  • Second: Create a process to acquire hacker-y books and expert references.
  • Third: Prune our shelves a bit. Bring the average usefulness up.

Searchable Catalog / library-org

An application exists to organize our books and submit new books by ISBN.

Go to application: http://library.noisebridge.net

How many books do we have right now?

A book barcode scannning effort was performed in October-December 2015 using noisebridge-bookscanner.

  • 75 barcodes were not identified. Those books are not yet ingested into library-org. If you find one please add it.
  • 1657 books have been ingested into library-org using Open Library

IMPORTANT: If you do any of the work below, be sure to update the list to remove the ones you added.

Here is a list of the barcodes that aren't yet in library-org. Each one represents an unknown book... please solve me.

One way to solve these is to google the UPC individually and find the book it corresponds to. At least one of the books in here is available this way. Try to find out which one!!

Here is a list of ISBNs that aren't in openlibrary or library-org. The workflow to add these is to find them on amazon, type the data into OpenLibrary, then import the OLID into library-org.

These three partial codes are not in library-org. They were in the original barcode scan. They represent books but are incomplete. They may be LCCNs.

What can I do?

Lots of help is needed! There are many open initiatives below:

Current Initiatives

  • Initiative 1: Filter books into white banker boxes to be stored out of sight (stacks)
  • Initiative 2: Collect sets of topic books from experts and source these books
  • Initiative 3: Add dewey decimal system to library
  • Initiative 4: Improve library-org
  • Initiative 5: Organize by Topic

Initiative 1: Filter books for the stacks

  • We should take less relevant books off the shelves
  1. Put books that do not belong on the shelves into the white banker boxes by the bookshelf.
  2. Tell user:robbintt if a box fills up
  3. Leave the box by the bookshelves

Initiative 2: Source New Books

  • Are you really good at something or reasonably well read? Make us a list of must-have books!
  • Add themed lists here: Resources/Library/Dead_Tree#Suggested Books
  • You can help acquire books by sourcing books on these lists!
  • Don't subtract them from the lists though, we can make a system for checking them off

Initiative 3: Dewey Decimal!

  • Label all 1449 books already in library-org with ISBNs on the spine
  • Recommended to use colored labels by broad subject
  • Label the shelves and sort the books into their locations
  • This could be supported by the library-org app, using a checklist or something. Since you can see the spine it may not be necessary
  • library-org needs a utility to allow you to manually edit an entry's dewey decimal (to add missing ones)

Initiative 4: Improve library-org

  • library-org is a Flask app
  • Current capabilities: receive new books, substring search, add location to each book, register new locations.

Initiative 5: Organize by topic

  • The library books were last organized and labeled during the October 2015 Noisebridge Refresh.
  • The library books are now only partially organized and need reorganized.
