==Compass Chip Research== Eric found this interesting paper on [http://www.google.com/url?sa=t&ct=res&cd=1&url=http%3A%2F%2Fwww.nxp.com%2Facrobat_download%2Fapplicationnotes%2FAN00022_COMPASS.pdf&ei=g-1gSuyWG4LmlAeFj63wCQ&rct=j&q=compass+chips&usg=AFQjCNEcC9aPeLRmwdb_PY_hS2iwxnlkmg Electronic Compass Design using KMZ51 and KMZ52], the KMZ51 is [http://search.digikey.com/scripts/DkSearch/dksus.dll?Detail&name=568-2425-1-ND out of stock] at digikey, but priced at only 4.67/1, 3.74/25, etc. My brief reading of the stat sheets makes it look like this is a 1-axis compass chip, only available in surface mount. So we'd need to make a little module with two of them and some headers. But I imagine in quantity you could get the cost of said module down under $10. There are also lots of little "hall effect" magnetic sensors, e.g. [http://www.asahi-kasei.co.jp/ake/en/product/hall/series-hq.html Asahi HQ-0111], which could be adapted as above as well. No idea on pricing of these though. Also, I found the iPhone chip, it's an AKM part, [https://webapps.nuhorizons.com/storefront/PartSearch.do;jsessionid=FB2DEB463D3D15DE8007671936DCFE8F?PostAction=GO&ItemsPerPage=25&PartNumberHolder=&Mode=initSearch&Commodity=ALL&InStockOnly=FALSE&I6.y=0&Manufacturer=ALLMFG&InStockOnly1=N&PartNumberSearch=AK8973&pSearchType=CompanyPart&PageNum=1&PbFreeOnly1=N&NextPage=1&I6=go&ResultsPerPage=10&PbFreeOnly=FALSE&I6.x=0&prevSearchType= AK8973], available for $6.30, min order 3000. We'd have to build a breakout board, but there is already [http://forum.sparkfun.com/viewtopic.php?t=16169&sid=90de51da367b46f98a226ff968c5b87c interest in that at Sparkfun], so it's a potential business idea.
