CRDA Part 97 Management Design[edit]

Adding support for operating Part 15 devices in Part 97 mode (or the non-US equivalent regulations) to the CRDA would allow the Linux kernel to directly support HSMM operation, instead of relying on patches.

At the moment, the only parts capable of HSMM operation are Atheros parts, as Broadcom has ignored requests to provide descriptions of the PHY registers used by their recently open sourced driver.

New Concepts for the CRDA[edit]

The CRDA would have to have infrastructure added to support the following high-level concepts:

  • A non-geographic regulatory domain, or "ruleset."
  • Identification beacons.
  • Callsigns.
  • A callsign operating in an alien regulatory domain, and the rules regarding identification in this situation.
  • An association between a ruleset and its allowed frequencies, power outputs, and other requirements.
  • An association between an alpha2 code/geographic regulatory domain and the valid rulesets there.
  • An emergency mode which disables all restrictions to allow the interface to pass critical traffic in times of distress.
