Noisebridge Tor Exit Fund

Noisebridge has teamed up with the EFF in the EFF's Tor Challenge. We are accepting donations to run Tor Exit Relays.

Donating vs Running Your Own Relay

Since bandwidth is cheaper in bulk, it is more economical to pool funds for it than to go it alone. To our knowledge, Noisebridge is the first US group accepting public donations to run Tor relays. Donations for our relay fund should be tax deductible.

Relay vs Exit

Exit relays are often scarce and difficult to run. Compared to normal relays, they require [more setup https://blog.torproject.org/blog/tips-running-exit-node-minimal-harassment] and a [good relationship with your ISP. https://trac.torproject.org/projects/tor/wiki/TheOnionRouter/GoodBadISPs].

In contrast, because of [how Tor works https://www.torproject.org/about/overview.html.en#thesolution], the network requires at least 33% of its capacity to be capable of exiting.

As of June 1, 2011, 45% of the Tor network capacity is capable of exiting.

Funding Stats

As of June 1, 2011, the balance of the Tor Exit Donation Pool is $P. This will enable us to operate for M months.

Next Scale Goal

If the donation pool reaches $G, we can purchase additional bandwidth, bringing our unit cost down to $A/UNIT, with sustained operation for N months.
